Two port innovation ecosystems sharing a common vision: open innovation as the driver of transformation in the maritime sector

On 26 May, Opentop organised an open port innovation session to welcome PIER71, the maritime innovation ecosystem co-founded by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and NUS Enterprise.
The session was held in a hybrid format and by personal invitation, with 25 on-site attendees and 27 joining remotely, including the startups invited to pitch and representatives from the Valenciaport Cluster Innovation Committee and the broader Valencian port and innovation ecosystem.
The day began with a round of institutional presentations: the Autoridad Portuaria de Valencia, Valencia Innovation Capital, Fundación Valenciaport and Opentop shared what makes the Valenciaport ecosystem great. Joining from Hamburg, the Port Innovators Network (PIN) was also presented — the global network of ten port innovation hubs of which Opentop is a founding member.
The PIER71 team then presented their ecosystem model: a community bringing together more than 190 global startups that has been connecting the maritime world with entrepreneurial talent since 2017 through its flagship programme, the Smart Port Challenge.
This was followed by a lively pitching session in which thirteen logistics and port startups — some attending in person from Valencia, others connecting from different countries — had four minutes to present their solutions and three minutes to answer questions.

The session concluded with a high level of satisfaction among all participants, and with takeaways that inspire us to keep seeking connections and synergies beyond geographical distance.
